The difference between integrating sphere testing and Goniophotometer testing

1. Integrating sphere & spectrometer test system

The integrating sphere test system uses the integral method. When testing, use the standard lamp to calibrate and then measure the sample lamp. The test result is a numerical value, and the tested luminous flux or color temperature is the relative value of the standard lamp’s luminous flux or color temperature. This set of equipment reflects light into the optical fiber through the diffuse reflection of the inner wall of the integrating sphere for measurement, and the test time is relatively short.

2. Goniophotometer test system

The goniophotometer uses photometry. During the test, the tested sample lamp or probe can be rotated to obtain parameter values at different angles. The final test result is a spatial light intensity table and a spatial color table, showing the values tested in different directions, not just an average value.
And the goniophotometer test is basically not affected by the shell of the lamp, the angle of light, etc. Because the light is directed into the probe during the test, and the lamp or probe is rotating, the light intensity and color temperature values at different angles can be tested. Of course, the average value of luminous flux and color temperature can also be displayed in the goniophotometer test report.

In general, as long as any parameter related to space, angle, and distance is tested (such as light intensity distribution, light distribution curve, etc.), it is necessary to use a goniophotometer for testing.

According to formal requirements, the integrating sphere system is used to test the light source, and the goniophotometer is used to test the lamps. In addition, you can also refer to the following methods to confirm the requirements:
1. For general factory quality inspection, you can use the integrating sphere test system; for laboratories with higher requirements, it is recommended to use a goniophotometer.
2. Test time: The integrating sphere test system can complete the test in only a few seconds after calibration, while the goniophotometer needs to test the spatial value, and the test time is at least ten minutes.
