What is Flicker?


Flicker refers to the fluctuation of the luminous flux of the electric light source at a certain frequency. Aiming at the light source with a mobile phone can often reveal a fringe distribution, which is caused by flicker. Some levels of flickering are unnoticed and physically uncomfortable; some flickering is a real problem.

As early as the 1990s, a large number of studies have found that light source flicker is closely related to neurological diseases such as migraine, headache, autism, visual fatigue and discomfort. 1. Visible Flicker

The human eye is a very complex system, and the individual differences are very large. For most people, light flickering below 80Hz can be detected. At this time, the human eye can perceive the light and dark changes, and the flickering frequency below 80Hz is also called. For visible flicker (visible flicker). Visible flicker is unacceptable for general lighting or displays.

 2. Flicker effect

3. Phantom Phenomenon

Similarly, when the flickering frequency of the light source is 80Hz-2kHz, and the objects in the environment remain stationary, when the human eye moves in position or direction, the stationary light source will have an extended light spot of the system, which is called a phantom phenomenon, such as a car taillight. , or glance at outdoor LED displays, etc.

 4. Hazards of flicker

Light source flicker is closely related to various neurological diseases such as migraine, headache, autism, eye fatigue, blurred vision and so on. Studies have shown that low-frequency flickering light sources of 3-70Hz may cause photosensitive epilepsy for some people; flickering frequencies of 100Hz are considered to cause headaches and migraine headaches; flickering light sources with a frequency of 120Hz may affect people's emotions, such as boredom, anxiety, etc. . The visual illusion caused by the flicker effect and the associated mechanical movement is very dangerous in industrial settings. Therefore, the accurate measurement and evaluation of the flicker characteristics of lighting products is directly related to people's health problems and needs to be solved urgently.
